They both remember what Mikan gave Hotaru on her birthday. It was a weird kind of doll especially made by Mikan, handmade. But, it was forcibly rejected by Hotaru.

Mikan: "All the friends I gave it to were very happy!" Mikan was now crying waterfalls.
Narumi: "Thank you, I already..."

The starting shot for the "Whose Present Will Be Most Liked By Natsume" competition was fired. 12 competitions in all.
Kokoroyomi: "In the end, I was counted too..."

Natsume wasn't really listening, he was in deep thought.
Ruka: "...Natsume?"
Natsume: "...Ruka, let's go back." With that, he walked away, leaving them behind.
Natsume's thoughts: "I don't think that, just one of us can escape from this..."

The day has passed and it was already night time... and Natsume was going to his room.

Everyone: "Happy Birthday! Got back first!"
Natsume's expression was shock and surprise written all over his face.

Narumi: "It's a daily use grooming kit. With this, even tidying your eyebrows is convenient." But Natsume throws it away just like what he did to Tsubasa-senpai's gift.

Kokoroyomi: "Natsume! This is my birthday present to you!" It was some kind of hairspray. "Cool, huh! Please use it!"
Iinchou gave Natsume a destressing CD, to treat stress. "I think probably very stressed by some small stuff nowadays."
Kitsuneme gave his present. "Mine's an anti-gravity skateboard. Use it so we can soar in the sky together."
Sumire: "This is my present! There's a necklace with my photo in it..."
Natsume just ignored Permy and went away from her.

Sumire: "Could you guys go somewhere else? You're so noisy!" She was already crying waterfalls.
Hotaru gave Natsume the Horse Shoe Glove, one of her inventions.

Natsume gets Mikan's present, went towards the window away from everyone, and stares at the picture. He then held the hourglass Ruka-pyon gave. His thoughts: "What's important...is not to protect anymore things. ...Just like this... If only... time would stop, just like this..." He held the hourglass close and closed his eyes.

Narumi: "It's a daily use grooming kit. With this, even tidying your eyebrows is convenient." But Natsume throws it away just like what he did to Tsubasa-senpai's gift.
Narumi: "Ah!"
Misaki-sensei: "Idiot, huh."
Kokoroyomi: "Natsume! This is my birthday present to you!" It was some kind of hairspray. "Cool, huh! Please use it!"
Iinchou gave Natsume a destressing CD, to treat stress. "I think probably very stressed by some small stuff nowadays."
Kitsuneme gave his present. "Mine's an anti-gravity skateboard. Use it so we can soar in the sky together."
Sumire: "This is my present! There's a necklace with my photo in it..."
Natsume just ignored Permy and went away from her.
Kokoroyomi: "Poor Permy..."
Kitsuneme: "Yeah, poor Permy..."
Sumire: "Could you guys go somewhere else? You're so noisy!" She was already crying waterfalls.
Hotaru gave Natsume the Horse Shoe Glove, one of her inventions.
Misaki-sensei gave Natsume some kind of flying crackers. "Sorry! Well... Because I joined at the last minute, I could only give something that I already had."
Natsume opened the bag of chips and out came flying the crackers.
Mikan: "Then...only my present left! Natsume! Happy birthday to you!"
Hotaru with Kokoroyomi reading her mind: "Is it a Mikan doll?" She sniggers.
Mikan: "Of course not!" She's crying waterfalls again.
Natsume opened his present. It was a camera and blank card with a pen.
Ruka: "A blank birthday card, and...single-use camera...?
Mikan: "This single-use camera, even though it can only be used once, it's a camera that can record sounds too! Central Town really lives up to its reputation! Because everyone keeps thinking i'm bad, so... I don't know how this'll be! Use this to take a commemorative photo of everyone here. And then, stick it to the card, and let everyone write something on it, I think that should be good... Hehe! Because i'll need everyone's help, it seems a little like i've violated the rules... So if I get first, don't blame me! But this was all I could think about when wondering what would make Natsume happy. It's rare we can all celebrate Natsume's birthday together, so the happy memories we make on this day should be preserved and treasured..."
Tsubasa: "Li'l brat, you can be good on the important time, too! At the RPG during the cultural festival, too!" He pats Mikan's head along with Kokoroyomi.
Narumi: "Yeah! It's really a great gift! Let's take a photo together, quick then. Everyone, gather round! Smile! Quickly!"
They then took a picture together.
Mikan: "...The person who came in last shouldn't matter now, right?"
Someone: "Yeah! At least we have a beautiful ending..."
Natsume: "I've decided. The person in last place."
Everyone: "Eh..."
Natsume picks... Mikan.
Mikan: "Eh! It's me?! Why? Why me?"
Someone: "Then Ruka-pyon and Youichi-chan can order Mikan to do whatever they want!"
Tsubasa pats Ruka's shoulders along with Kokoroyomi. "That's great, Ruka-pyon! Fantastic!"
Mikan runs towards Hotaru and hugs her tightly, while crying. "Hotaru!"
Tsubasa: "Sigh. It's Natsume's birthday after all. Anything that brings that fellow closer to the others would be counted as a good thing... Feel a bit like making smart remarks."
Natsume gets Mikan's present, went towards the window away from everyone, and stares at the picture. He then held the hourglass Ruka-pyon gave. His thoughts: "What's important...is not to protect anymore things. ...Just like this... If only... time would stop, just like this..." He held the hourglass close and closed his eyes.
